Yes. We will beat EdgeRank!

Facebook EdgeRank - how does it workEdgeRank is the algorithm that Facebook uses when deciding on where to place your updates in other peoples newsfeeds.

You may have thought that all your updates go into your friends or page followers newsfeeds. Well they DON’T.

Why don’t your updates always appear in their newsfeed? Because Facebook decides if your post is interesting enough.

Next question then is “how do you make your posts more interesting?” Here your content strategy will help but lets crack EdgeRank first.

First up posts with photos and videos are deemed more interesting than those with just links or just text. So always try and get some rich media into your posts.

Additionally if Facebook has just launched a new post type (like polls) – then they get favoured by EdgeRank too because obviously Facebook will want to encourage the use of their new playthings.

Next EdgeRank will take into account how old your post is, the fresher the better.

But possibly the most important factor is affinity or engagement – by which we mean, if the reader has liked or commented on your posts recently then EdgeRank will definitely put it in their newsfeed. If they haven’t interacted with your posts, then FB assumes they’ve lost interest and stops posting them into their feed.

This is really important stuff for brands – stats show that 96% of people never return to a brands FB page after they’ve liked it and that FB users spend 27% of their time on FB browsing their newsfeed. So the best way of getting your brand exposure is through the newsfeed and that means beating EdgeRank.

But remember, even if you do master EdgeRank – only 16% of your fans will see your posts. So you’ve got to keep pumping out high quality, visually appealing posts on a daily basis (try different times of the day to see when your fans or friends are online).

That way you will beat EdgeRank!
