Google Penguin update. A year on.

It’s nearly a year since the Penguin update which came down hard on cloaking, duplicate content and blatant use of key word stuffing. So where are we now.

Google will continue to try and serve up “quality” sites to its surfers and that’s obviously no bad thing. But what makes a site “quality”.

Pretty much everything that Knife Box will tell you.

  1. Don’t bother with cheap or dodgy back links. You’re easily found out by doing that. Just grow your links naturally by creating good sharable content.
  2. Make sure your visitors can get to the stuff they need quickly. Page layout is important here and Google doesn’t like it there is no decent content above the fold.
  3. Keep adding new content to the site in the form of blogs and articles.
  4. Continue to use social media especially Google + to share content
  5. Check out the new things that Google Local – Business Photos for example
  6. Encourage your customers to review you

In summary this is basically about just doing all the good stuff you should already be doing. The Penguin update and the Panda update before that are more aimed at companies employing Black Hat SEO tactics which is great because it gives us honest grafters a chance.
